| Both the geopolymer circular plate membrane and the self-supporting NaA zeolite membrane were tested for pervaporation (PV) during the dehydration of alcohol and desalination of seawater. The preliminary measurements of the pervaporation during the dehydration of alcohol were reported in our previous work [16]. This study primarily investigated the pervaporation during the desalination of NaCl solutions (all feed with NaCl concentration of 3.5 wt%). In particular, the pervaporation characteristics with different PV temperatures and membrane thicknesses were evaluated using pervaporative NaCl solutions and pure water with a lab-designed and lab-assembled pervaporation test apparatus [1, 15]. The self-supporting NaA zeolite membranes (thickness = 9.4 mm) were tested for PV at 25, 40, 70, and 90ºC using pure water and NaCl solutions. One batch of pure water or NaCl solutions was applied to the PV tests. The flux of the NaCl solutions (0.42 kg m-2 h-1 at 25ºC) gradually increased to 3.86 kg m-2 h-1 as the PV temperature increased to 90ºC. The data shown in Fig. 5 clearly indicate that the flux of the NaCl solutions was larger than that of pure water at PV temperatures lower than 90ºC. The theory is based on the fact that the apparent activation energy of the water permeation in the NaCl solutions decreased with increasing PV temperature and was always less than that of the pure water [1]. |
