| Based on the above results and discussions, it can be hypothesized that the self-supporting NaA zeolite membranes have a pervaporation effect on the desalination of NaCl solution under some conditions if the membranes have a suitable thickness (approximately 9.4mm with ion % rejection of 99.5%) and that this membrane is possible used as separation membranes for real seawater desalination because they possess high compressive strength (approximately 57 MPa) and good ion % rejection (approximately 99.5% at a water flux of 0.42 kg m-2 h-1 and 25ºC). In addition, the geopolymers can be easily fabricated and free-sintered at a low cost in contrast to traditional membranes. Therefore, the use of zeolite membranes for the separation of water from mixed solutions would be economical and effective. Although the technique and the desalination mechanism controlled by the non-zeolitic pores need to be improved, this paper provides new methods for the fabrication of self-supporting zeolite membranes with different Si/Al ratios (such as NaX, NaY, and ZSM-5) by adjusting the composition of the geopolymers. These membranes can be applied for dehydration, seawater desalination, and catalytic membrane reactors, as will most likely be studied in future works. In addition, the improvement of the separation effect by effectively closing the non-zeolitic porosity at the surface will be investigated. |
