In our previous work, we successfully prepared NaA zeolites through hydrothermal processes using chemosynthetic low silicon geopolymers [15-16]. Geopolymers are non-crystalline or quasi-crystalline gels with three-dimensional network structures that were first introduced by Joseph Davidovits in 1978 [17]. In general, geopolymers are prepared from natural minerals or solid wastes through the polymerization of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra and aluminum-oxygen tetrahedra [17-19]. However, in this work, the geopolymers were synthesized through the sol-gel method to overcome the disadvantage of using impure raw materials [20-21]. In this paper, we report the preparation and study of an Al2O3-2SiO2-Na2O geopolymer membrane transformed in situ into a self-supporting NaA zeolite membrane through a hydrothermal process. The preliminary results from the desalination of NaCl solutions using the self-supporting NaA membrane were also reported. In this paper, we first prepared inorganic membranes of an Al2O3-2SiO2-Na2O geopolymer through a gel casting process and then transformed the material into a NaA zeolite through a hydrothermal procedure. Hence, self-supporting zeolite membranes may be prepared through a hydrothermal synthesis procedure using a geopolymer gel according to the directions shown in Fig. 1. |
