Biomed Research International - Bioencapsulation in Tissue Engineering
|
|
Bioencapsulation technologies have shown great promise for tissue engineering including cell-based therapies. First, bioencapsulation technologies could be applied for cell encapsulation. The encapsulation of living cells in macro/microscale capsules provides a promising route for immunoisolation: the capsule¡¯s membrane protects the encapsulated cells from being damaged by both the host¡¯s immune system and mechanical stresses while allowing free diffusion of nutrients and metabolic waste for the encapsulated cells to survive. Second, it has been shown that bioencapsulation technologies could be used for directed differentiation of stem cells for constructing different tissue types with high efficiency and specificity compared with 2D cell differentiation. Third, interestingly, it has also been shown that bioencapsulation technology could be applied to cell cryopreservation, which could also help resolve the tissue preservation issue before transplantation. Last but not least, it has been confirmed that biocapsules could be utilized for constructing lung alveolus-like structures and vascularized 3D tissues, which is a novel and emerging field of tissue engineering. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will promote continuing efforts to explore applications of bioencapsulation technologies in tissue engineering. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: Novel applications of bioencapsulation technologies for tissue engineering including cell-based therapies Screening appropriate cell sources for bioencapsulation Novel bioencapsulation materials for tissue engineering Interaction between encapsulated cells and the host body Directed (stem) cell differentiation within the capsules Cryopreservation of bioencapsulated cells Construct tissue-engineered structures using capsules as a scaffold material Expert opinion(s) on bioencapsulation for tissue engineering, especially challenges, future trends, and government regulations Authors can submit their manuscripts via the Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/jo ... engineering/abtte/. Manuscript Due Friday, 3 July 2015 First Round of Reviews Friday, 25 September 2015 Publication Date Friday, 20 November 2015 |
