ASSISTANT or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR – NATURAL RESOURCES RECREATION AND TOURISM Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources – University of Georgia POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: We seek a scientist to join our natural resources recreation and tourism (NRRT) program. Potential areas of specialty for this position are (1) valuation of nature-based goods and services (e.g., ecosystem services, recreation and tourism), (2) protected area management, and/or (3) sustainable tourism management. This is a nine-month, tenure-track, research/teaching (50/50) appointment, with involvement in outreach and service activities. Rank will be Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications. The NRRT major is growing, and we seek a scientist who will diversify the expertise in our program. The successful candidate will be expected to develop strong collaborative relationships with, and work on, management-oriented research with state agencies, federal agencies, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. Depending on the successful candidate’s specific expertise, possible courses assigned to this position include undergraduate and/or graduate courses in protected area management, natural resources economics, social science research techniques, and/or a graduate-level course in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate also is expected to help further develop the Warnell School’s NRRT program, advise/mentor undergraduate professional students, serve on Senior Project/Thesis advisory committees, direct/mentor graduate students, serve on School/University committees, and actively participate in professional /scientific societies. Appointment as an Associate Professor requires at least four years’ experience equivalent to an Assistant Professor and clear evidence of emerging stature as a national authority in their research field. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (Warnell School). QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, at least one degree in a natural resources management field, and appropriate training and experience in the areas of NRRT. Evidence of research productivity and the ability to attract external research funding are required. The person also must have experience teaching, and demonstrate an ability and willingness to teach undergraduate and graduate courses. THE STATE & UNIVERSITY: Georgia is well-known for its quality of life, both in terms of outdoor and urban activities (www.georgia.gov). The University of Georgia (www.uga.edu) is a land/sea grant institution comprised of 16 schools and colleges, and is located <90 miles from Atlanta. Enrollment is about 35,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Warnell School is a professional school with 57 faculty, 350 undergraduates, and 180 graduate students (www.warnell.uga.edu). The School offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Forest Resources, Master of Natural Resources, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the areas of Fisheries and Wildlife, Forestry, Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism, and Water and Soil Resources. The School has a 740-acre forest <10 minutes from campus and 23,000 acres of forestland across the state for teaching and research. The Georgia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and a unit of the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center are affiliated with the School. A research group from the U.S. Forest Service Southern Research Station (www.srs.fs.usda.gov/recreation/index.html) and the National Park Service’s Southeast Coast Network Climate Science Support Center also are located on campus.
