For years Nigeria (table 2) was known for its intense blue aquamarine, a gem variety of beryl, considered by many to be the finest commercial quality available, even with the minor inclusions inherent in the material. As supplies ran short the Nigerian miners found a new source of tourmaline (elbaite) in brownish-red to red colors, some of which is considered to be rubellite. It is estimated that 100 tons of this tourmaline rough of all qualities came out during the last few years, mostly from alluvial sources close to its formation, as evidenced by the mostly sharp crystals and lack of erosion on many of the pieces. This material is now scarcely found in the rough. Instead, a blue-green to blue tourmaline, some of which is considered to be indicolite, is now being mined in a different locality.

多年来,尼日尼亚(表2)一直以其高亮蓝光海蓝宝石闻名世界,这种宝石材质中,虽然有少许天然杂质,但其包含各种苍绿玉,被认为具有最好的商品质量。但由于供应短缺,尼日利亚矿工又发现一种新的电气石(锂电气石),色度由棕红色到纯红色不一,其中有些还被认为是红电气石。据估计,在过去的几年间,有约100吨的这种品质不一的电气石出土,它们是由冲积层(与其形成层接近)中最为锋利的晶体,由于多面缺少自然腐蚀而形成。目前这种材料基本上很难被发现,相反, 一些色度由蓝绿到纯绿的电气石(其中有些是蓝电气石)在许多不同地方被挖掘到。
