Research Fellow Position Biomimetic Water Desalination Process: Learning from Mangrove Project duration: 3 years (Jan-15 to Dec-17) AEBC-NEWRI is a Research Centre of Excellence with focuses on development of wastewater treatment and reclamation process. There is a new opportunity for 1 Research Fellow (RF) or Senior RF to join the centre for the project on ¡°Biomimetic Water Desalination Process: Learning from Mangrove¡±. New membrane technologies for water desalination processes have been of national interest to Singapore. The project aims to develop new membrane structure by drawing inspiration from mangrove desalination capability. Future applicability of the mangrove-mimetic membrane will be investigated in the next stages including pilot plant process development. The multi-institution team leverages on Singapore existing strong infrastructure in both water and membrane research. Research Fellow Position The research fellow will be responsible in bringing the membrane synthesis capability into the project. He/she will start with chemical synthesis of nano/microstructures with high salt rejection rate while maintain high filtration flux. The RF will work with plant physiologist upon elucidation of the mangrove anatomy and chemical composition. Duration: This appointment will be on a 2 year contractual basis with renewal possibility contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding. Job Scope: • The successful candidate will lead development of new membrane structures for water desalination; • The successful candidate will perform synthesis and integration of the mangrove-mimetic structures onto membrane, characterize the synthesized membrane, and analyze the membrane performance; • The successful candidate shall need to take on considerable responsibility and requires initiative when doing the research work; • The successful candidate will mentor 1-2 Ph.D. students, a research assistant, and 1-2 undergraduate students. • The successful candidate will be expected to submit the first manuscript within the first year of the start of the project. Requirements: • Ph.D., Materials Science/Chemistry/related fields with 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience. • The candidate should have strong working knowledge on organic synthesis, in particular polymer/lipid mimicking natural products; experience in integrating biological materials to membranes is highly preferred. Organic/lipid synthesis experience in suberin will be an advantage. • Working knowledge in membrane characterizations (SEM, TEM, confocal microscopy, water flux determination, salt rejection rate, etc.) • Familiarity with proteomics and general plant protein isolation and characterization techniques. • Highly motivated and dedicated to the development of the project. • Evidence of research independence and track record of first author publications. • Excellent laboratory, planning, and leadership skills. • Ability to integrate well into a team of researchers with different backgrounds, and the ability to learn new techniques. Please attach your full CV, with the names and contacts (including email addresses) of 2 character referees, and all relevant academic certificates. Interested applicants please send your CV, transcripts and one sample publication to NEWRI-HR@ntu.edu.sg and SLim@ntu.edu.sg |
