Monitoring Surface-ModificationSteps onPHBVFilmsby XPS. After each modification step, XPS was applied to characterize the modified surfaces to achieve the information on chemical structure and atomic concentration. Four different surfaces, namely, PHBV films (PHBV), NH3 plasma-treated PHBV films (PHBVNH2), MAL-PEG-grafted PHBV films (PHBV-PEGMAL), and RGD-modifiedPHBVfilms (PHBV-RGD) were analyzed byXPS. Table 1 lists the intensities (i.e., the measured peak areas divided by the corresponding sensitivity factors and normalized to 100% total intensity) of the elements on the four different surfaces. Therewas no nitrogen signal found on the PHBV surface. The nitrogen signal appeared after NH3 plasma treatment, and the intensities increased after subsequent reactions with bifunctional PEG and RGD peptides. |
