To avoid the possible chain relaxation processes, bifunctional PEG should
be linked to PHBV-NH2 surfaces through the reaction between
the amino groups and the hydroxysuccinimidyl groups, immediately
after NH3 plasma treatment. The contact angle of the
resulting film was 35(2, consistent with PEG films reported in
the literature.38 Finally, RGD peptides were grafted and the
contact angle rose to 45(1 because of the hydrophobic groups
of the introduced peptides.39 Such a surface modification strategy
renders the PHBV surface hydrophilicity through the NH3
plasma treatment and the introduction of PEG segments. In
general, the hydrophilic surface property is helpful to improve
the material’s biocompatibility
