Two PhD scholarships in Resilient Infrastructure Systems
|
|
PhD Scholarships at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia Background: We are looking for multiple PhD students to join the Resilient Infrastructure Systems (RIS) research group within Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Science and Engineering Faculty (SEF). RIS is the nexus of collaborative research to address the grand challenges of infrastructure resilience, hazard mitigation and sustainability. We are looking to add PhD student members to our team of civil engineers (structural, construction engineering), transport engineers, mechanical engineers, planners and building constructors. Below are summaries of some of the projects we are looking for students to support. • Vulnerability assessment for flood hazards: Recent floods caused billions in damages to the state of Queensland. In this project we aim to combine existing flood hazard data with physical properties of the built environment (e.g. roads & buildings) to create vulnerability maps to improve decision-making around engineering design and hazard mitigation financing. • Building energy use and efficiency: The building industry is the largest consumer of electricity and responsible for the largest carbon footprint of all non-manufacturing industries. In this project we analyse the design and operation decisions that pertain to energy efficiency, and optimization of these parameters in maximizing energy efficiency. • Civil engineering optimization: The work done in this field has been limited to scaled down and simplified version of civil engineering problems, i.e. structural design, schedule optimization, resource allocation etc. The idea here is to combine the advancements in processing power, and parallel and cloud computing to solve real life scale civil engineering optimization problems. Qualifications required of PhD student applicants: • Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Atmospheric Science or Statistics with a first class honours or Equivalent or • Masters by Research degree in related field, or • Masters Degrees by coursework and professional doctorates must contain a significant research component of no less than 33% of the total degree and a high overall GPA • Qualifications, including English requirements for PhD candidates set by QUT Qualifications desired of student applicants: • Work or research experience on stochastic methods. • Experience in Matlab, GIS, Python, and any of the major statistics software. Scholarship/finance support package: • AU$25,500 per year (tax free) for 3 years • QUT tuition waiver scholarship Supervisors and contact information: Dr Duzgun Agdas, duzgun.agdas@qut.edu.au Dr Zuduo Zheng zuduo.zheng@qut.edu.au Interested Applicants: Interested applicants should submit a CV or resume, a list of three references, and a maximum one page statement of their interest and qualifications relevant to the opportunity to duzgun.agdas@qut.edu.au and zuduo.zheng@qut.edu.au. Positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis given that requirements are satisfied. |
