the soaking time in SBF: (a) For soaking periods up to 9 days, two zones with different morphology could be observed on the biphasic material surface. After one day, SEM micrographs did not show any kind of coating. For soaking times between 3 and 9 days two different zones could be observed by SEM micrographs. EDS analyses were carried out on 10 different zones with similar look and 22 mm16 mm area, confirming that one of them (zone II) was composed by Ca and P, whereas the other one (zone I) was composed by the initial elements (Ca, Fe, Si, P). Fig. 6 shows the SEM micrographs of both zones, including the EDS results. The surface in contact with SBF was heterogeneous, with grains with composition SiO2.CaO.P2O5 (sol–gel-derived glass) and grains with composition SiO2.CaO.Fe2O3 (melt-derived glass).Their crystallinity and particle sizes were also different. On some zones of the biphasic material surface, grains from the melt-derived glass (FeG) emerged; their crystallinity, combined with the absence of P in their composition, contributed to get lower kinetics of the bioactive process. These zones corresponded with type I in Fig. 6. They show bioactive behaviour with very slow kinetics. For this material it is necessary about one month to reach a bioactivity similar to the obtained for the biphasic material soaked only one day in SBF [19].
