GRE issue No.2: Progress should be the aim of any great society
|

This is the 2nd GRE issue and my answer attached and I am looking forward to your comments. Directions: You will be given a statement that presents an issue you need to respond to, along with detailed instructions on how to respond to the statement. You have 30 minutes to plan and compose a response in which you develop an argument according to the instructions. A response to any other issue results in a score of zero. “Progress should be the aim of any great society. People too often cling unnecessarily to obsolete ways of thinking and acting because of both a high comfort level and a fear of unknown.” Write a response in which you examine your own position on the statement. Explore the extent to which you either agree or disagree with it, and support your reasoning with evidence and/or examples. Be sure to reflect on ways in which the statement might or might not be true, and how this informs your thinking on the subject. Any highly advanced society is consisted of myriad of brave and persistent individuals because the atmosphere of comfortable and enjoying life by avoiding facing with potential challenges will ruin courage and morale of a nation to progress. The development of a nation or country is like floating in a counter-current river, if individuals on that boat resist strive to move ahead, the constant drifting stream will take the boat far behind others which are never stopping moving forward. Though the people relaxed themselves without thinking up new ideas and criticize former theories and successfully escaping worries that might fail sometimes, but they lost the game because others might surpass by continuing trying new approach and methods to solving old and new problems despite that they may encounter adversities for sure. Numerous examples could illustrate this proposal, and in modern history, Qing dynasty was stroked and destroyed by many westrern countries, including that one of the most fabulous and marvelous garden called YuanMingYuan was totally fired and stolen by western soldiers. Because at that time, even if the Qing had the highest GDP and covered a large number of resources and finance foundation. But the empire did not realize their creativity and national political system was not suitable for the productivity and relationship between the land owner and farmers. It needed change which was failed by subtle attempts of incentive people.Since the authority forbidden any creating activities and inventing something interesting would be sterned by others and science and technology were ignored by education that mainly focused on arts like Chinese writings. The result of this series of consequences led the Qing to be lost it dominant status in the World and was left behind by other western countries which had already changed their producing relationships by re-distributing capitals and reconstructing capitalists and workers relationships. The alternation permitted liberating productivity and allured various advancement of technology and science. And their advantage still alive in nowadays. Hence, it has to be admitted that change is not always easy as it must cause failures and drawbacks that might hinder any progressive power to emerge and thrive. But instead of being absorbed in comfortable and cozy situation, one could not witness bright future that was blinded by mountains stood behind without climbing by trying different paths to appreciate fantastic views. No one would like to be the men that stopped finding new cheese after realizing that theirs were moved and consumed, since finally the only ending for them is dying of hunger. |
