This book is part of an 11-volume reference set edited by A.J. Bard and M. Stratmann, intended as a source of information for electrochemists as well as the broad range of engineers and scientists who use electrochemistry in their work and for students needing a starting point for research. Electrochemistry is now used in the study of organic and inorganic compounds and biological systems as well as in applications including analysis for chemical impurities, prevention of corrosion of materials, and conversion of chemical energy into electricity, to name a few. Scholz (chemistry and biochemistry, U. of Greifswald) and Pickett (chemistry, U. of East Anglia) compile 22 articles beginning with discussion of standard potentials; formal and other characteristic potentials of selected electrode reactions; redox potential-structure relationships in coordination compounds; molecular hydrogen, hydride, and dihydrogen complexes; and redox properties and electrochemistry of oxygen. Following are chapters on carbon; nitrogen; sulfur; halogens; silicon; alkali metals; titanium, zirconium, and hafnium; vanadium; niobium and tantalum; chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten; manganese, technetium, and rhenium; the iron group; the nickel group; and cobalt-containing species.
