Phraseological Dictionary English - German: General Vocabulary in Technical and Scientific Texts 封面：  简介： The dictionary lists the general vocabulary - nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives - which occurs in practically all technical texts. This vocabulary should be mastered by all those who actively or passively work with technical texts since it provides the structures into which the technical terms of various fields of technology are embedded. The keywords are provided with numerous model sentences illustrating their usage and offering the user a variety of suggestions for his / her own formulations. Foreword The Phraseological Dictionary deals with the general vocabulary used in technical and scientific texts. The dictionary intends to fill the gap between general and specific technical dictionaries. It contains vocabulary found in all types of technical texts, be they mechanical, electrical or other. Examinations have shown that as a rule 45 % of specialized technical texts are structural words such as prepositions, conjunctions, articles, etc., 20 to 25% are technical terms and 30 to 35 % are words taken from the general vocabulary of a language. It is the last category which is at the center of this dictionary. Frequency counts have shown that this category comprises a limited number of nouns, verbs and adjectives which occur and recur in all technical material. This selection of nouns, verbs and adjectives thus constitutes a body of basic technical and scientific vocabulary which should be mastered by all those who actively or passively work with English technical languages since these words provide the structures into which the specific technical terms of the various fields of technology are embedded. The individual keywords are provided with numerous model sentences illustrating their current usage and offering the user a wide range of suggestions for his / her own formulations. Although everybody with a basic knowledge of English will have encountered many of these words before, this dictionary will provide them with a systematic and in-depth approach to the typical usage of this vocabulary in a technological environment. The dictionary shows how these words assume new meanings and functions when used in a technical context. In the compilation of the Phraseological Dictionary numerous corpora of technical texts from many fields of current technology have been used. The authors also drew on their many years’ translating and teaching experience in putting this work together. All those who need to understand, write or speak about technical matters will greatly benefit from this work which addresses the student, teacher, engineer, scientist, translator, and business person trying to come to grips with the intricacies of technical languages. The authors hope that this work will assist a great many users of the English technical languages and would welcome additional suggestions. |
