| With the war over and colonial empires crumbling, the world entered into a “Cold War” increasingly divided into blocs led by the Soviet Union and the United States. Americans reached a consensus that Soviets were evil atheists out for world domination and concluded that the United States was the only country capable of stopping them. As the United States accepted the superpower role it still maintains, the country moved from a dependence on conventional armies to a strategy of sophisticated airpower, long-range missiles, nuclear submarines, and thermonuclear warheads. |
