School of Engineering Monash University Malaysia November 2014 PhD position in computational and experimental studies of saline infusion in liver A fully-funded Masters / PhD position is open in the School of Engineering (Mechanical), Monash University Malaysia. The research focuses on using computational and experimental techniques to study the effects of saline infusion on the radiofrequency ablation treatment of liver cancer. The position is opened to both Malaysian and international candidates. Selection criteria: 1. A Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from a recognized tertiary institution with minimum grade, equivalent to H2A. 2. An overall band score of not less than 6.5 on the IELTS test (Academic) and at least 6.0 is required for each band score. 3. Strong theoretical and computational modelling background. 4. Keen interest in cross-disciplinary research. 5. Experience in computational modelling software such as COMSOL Multiphysics or ANSYS Fluent. 6. Experience in medical-related experiments is not required but highly desirable. Project summary Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been successfully used for treating liver cancers. However, the procedure becomes problematic when tissue temperature is raised beyond 100C. At this temperature, water inside the tissue vaporizes and insulates the surrounding tissue from electrical currents, thus barring it from further heating. To overcome these limitations, some researchers combined RFA with saline infusion, with the expectation that the high electrical conductivity and heat convection effects will help to create larger ablation volumes. Ex vivo laboratory studies have confirmed this; however, this technique has yet to be fully implemented in a clinical setting due to the unpredictability of saline distribution inside the tissue. Risks of over-ablation and under-ablation are therefore prevalent. We propose to use computational modelling techniques to investigate the perfusion and distribution of saline inside liver tissue prior to and during RFA. Two models will be developed: a single-tissue model and a two-tissue model. The single-tissue model consists of only the liver and is used for validation against ex vivo experiments, while the two-tissue model comprises the tumor and the surrounding liver and is used for predictive modelling. A fully coupled electrical, thermal and transport fields will be considered within the porous liver in order to obtain the most accurate representation of the problem. |
