Bioactive glasses and glass–ceramics have anotherapplication in the field of biomaterials: the eliminationof cancerous cells in bones, by means of hyperthermia
[12–15]. This therapy consists of the selective heating of
a fixed zone. Above 431C the cancerous cells are the first
to die when a heat treatment is applied. This occurs
because less blood vessels and nervous ramifications arepresent in those zones and, therefore, they are less
oxygenated. If the heat treatment is selective, that is,431C, and the application time is controlled, it could be
possible to damage the cancerous cells without alteringthe healthy ones. The inclusion of magnetic aggregates
in glasses or glass–ceramics of the system SiO2–CaO–P2O5 could be a solution for this application. On the one
hand, it is possible to achieve the bonding of thebioactive glass and the bone and the growth of the latter,
and on the other hand, it is possible to control theincrease of the temperature due to the hysteresis loop of
the magnetic material and the induced eddy currentswhen a variable external magnetic field is applied.

生物活性玻璃和玻璃陶瓷在生物材料领域有另一应用:通过局部升温(热疗)清除骨内癌细胞。这一疗法通过固定区域的选择性加热实现。实施热疗时,当温度超过43度,癌细胞首先死亡。发生这一现象是因为该区域血管和神经分支较少,因此不容易与氧结合。如果热疗是选择性的,即43度,且热疗时间可控,则可以杀死癌细胞而不改变正常细胞。将磁性聚集体包裹在SiO2–CaO–P2O5体系的玻璃或玻璃陶瓷中可能是热疗的一种方法。一方面可以实现生物活性玻璃和骨的键合并促进骨的生长,另一方面当附加外部可变磁场时能够利用磁性材料的磁滞回线和产生的涡旋电流控制升温。(朋友,你要做磁热疗吗?)
