PhD Studentship Powder Metallurgy Group School of Metallurgy and Materials, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences University of Birmingham PhD research projects • Development of Sn-based nanocomposite overlayer for bearing applications • Powder metallurgy processing and characterisation of low cost Ti alloys • Biodegradable Fe-based alloy stents • Synthesis and characterisation of metallic and ceramic nanoparticles • Green synthesis of superhard ceramic from biopolymer • Synthesis of graphene flakes by novel electrical arc discharge method • Low temperature synthesis of transfer-free graphene films on glass substrate • 3D printing of metallic and ceramic components • Bulk metallic glass based master making process chains for micro replication. Entry requirementEntry requirement The PhD is open to candidates with an upper second-class Honours degree or its equivalent in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or Engineering and an English Language (eg IELTS) qualification acceptable to the University of Birmingham’s entry requirement. Students with a Master degree, publications (in referred journals) and practical experience in the operation of materials characterisation equipment, such as XRD, SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy would be desirable.
