A team of researchers at Louisiana Tech University has developed an innovative method for using affordable, consumer-grade 3D printers and materials to fabricate custom medical implants that can contain antibacterial and chemotherapeutic compounds for targeted drug delivery. ·Ò×°²ÄÉÖÝÀí¹¤´óѧµÄÑо¿ÕßÃÇͨ¹ý´«Í³µÄ3D´òÓ¡¼¼Êõ³É¹¦ÖÆÔì³öÁËÒ»ÖÖÐÂÐ͵ÄÒ©ÎïÂñÖ²¼Á£¬ÕâÖÖÒ©ÎïÂñÖ²¼Á°üº¬¿¹ÉúËغͻ¯ÁÆÒ©Î¿ÉÓÃÓÚÒ©ÎïµÄ°ÐÏò´«Êä¡£ The team comprised of doctoral students and research faculty from Louisiana Tech¡¯s biomedical engineering and nanosystems engineering programs collaborated to create filament extruders that can make medical-quality 3D printing filaments. Creating these filaments, which have specialized properties for drug delivery, is a new concept that can result in smart drug delivering medical implants or catheters. The material can be loaded with antibiotics or other medicinal compounds, and the implant can be naturally broken down by the body over time.¡± ¡°ÔÚ¿´µ½ÁË3D´òÓ¡»úµÄÓ¦ÓÃÖ®ºó£¬ÎÒÃÇÒâʶµ½²ÉÓÃÕâÖÖ¼¼ÊõÀ´½øÐпìËÙÔÐÍÉè¼Æ»áÊÇÒ»¸ö»ú»á¡£¡±Â·Ò×˹°²ÄÇÖݿƼ¼´óѧÉúÎïҽѧ¹¤³Ì²©Ê¿Éú½Ü¸¥Èð•Íþ˹Âü˵£¬¡°Í¨¹ýÄÉÃ×Á£×ÓÒÔ¼°ÆäËûÌí¼ÓÎïµÄ¼ÓÈ룬ÕâÏî¼¼Êõ±äµÃ¸ü¼Ó¾ßÓпÉÐÐÐÔ¡£Ä¿Ç°Ó¦Óô«Í³3D´òÓ¡²ÄÁÏÖÆÔì³öµÄ²úÆ·ÒÔ²»»á²úÉúÅÅÒì·´Ó¦¡£ÕâЩ²ÄÁÏ¿ÉÒÔ´îÔØ¿¹ÉúËغÍÆäËûÒ©Îï³É·Ö£¬²¢ÇÒÒ»¶Îʱ¼äºó»áÔÚÉíÌåÖÐ×ÔÈ»½µ½â¡£¡± According to Weisman, personalized medicine and patient specific medication regiments is a current trend in healthcare. Mills, professor of biological sciences and biomedical engineering, partnered with Connor Nicholson, a doctoral candidate in nanosystems engineering and member of a lab operated by Dr. Chester Wilson, associate professor of electrical and nanosystems engineering, to develop the technology in collaboration with Mills. The group also worked with Extrusionbot, LLC of Phoenix, Arizona, who provided important materials support throughout the development and testing process. Most of today¡¯s antibiotic implants, or ¡°beads,¡± are made out of bone cements which have to be hand-mixed by a surgeon during a surgical procedure and contain toxic carcinogenic substances. These beads, which are actually a type of Plexiglas, do not break down in the body and require additional surgery for removal. Weisman and his team¡¯s custom 3D print filaments can be made of bioplastics which can be resorbed by the body to avoid the need for additional surgery. ´ÓÄÇÒ»¿Ì¿ªÊ¼£¬ÕâÏî¼¼ÊõÖð²½Ðγɲ¢ÇÒ¿ª´´ÐԵؽâ¾öÁËÐí¶àÒ©Îï´«ÊäÁìÓòËùÓöµ½µÄÎÊÌ⡣Ŀǰ£¬´ó¶àÊýË®Äý½ºÎ¢Çò»ò¿¹ÉúËØÂñÖ²¼Á¶¼ÊÇÒÔË®Äà¹ÇΪÔÁÏÀ´ÖÆÔì³öÀ´µÄ¡£ÕâÖÖ΢Çò±ØÐëÓÉÍâ¿ÆÒ½ÉúÔÚÊÖÊõ¹ý³ÌÖÐÈ˹¤»ìºÏ£¬²¢ÇÒº¬ÓÐÖ°©ÎïÖÊ¡£ÕâÖÖ΢Çòʵ¼ÊÉÏÊÇÒ»ÖÖÊ÷Ö¬²£Á§£¬ËüÃÇÔÚÈËÌåÖв»Äܽµ½â£¬ÐèÒª¶îÍâµÄÊÖÊõ½øÐÐÒƳý¡£¶øÓÃ3D´òÓ¡¼¼ÊõÖÆÔì³öµÄ˿״Îï¿ÉÒÔ±»ÓÃÀ´ÖƳɿɱ»ÈËÌåÎüÊÕ£¬ÎÞÐè¶îÍâÊÖÊõÈ¡³öµÄÉúÎïËÜÁÏ¡£ The nature of the 3D printing process developed at Louisiana Tech allows for the creation of partially hollow beads that provide for a greater surface area and increased drug delivery and control.
