Corrosion protection properties summarised in Tables VI-VIII and shown in Figures 12-14 showed that: 1 all paint films derived from the formulation groups showed excellent filliform corrosion resistance, showing corrosion only in the scratched area; and 2 paint films containing 3Fe2O3: 1Al2O3 and 1Fe2O3: 3Al2O3 showed the highest resistance, while a lower resistance was imparted by films containing 1Fe2O3: 1Al2O3 and Fe2O3. Such observations may be attributed to the fact that both iron oxide and aluminium oxide have the same chemical formula, i.e. one can replace the other in its crystal lattice easily exhibiting a synergistic effect, where a pure solid solution is formed, with a homogeneous texture. In the case where there is a presence of one of the two oxides at a higher concentration than the other in the solid solution, good corrosion resistance results. Both iron oxide and alumina exhibited a barrier effect. At their presence in equal concentrations, the anticorrosion protection properties showed lower values. This may be attributed to the fact that their barrier effects contradict each other. At presence of one of the two components in a higher concentration than the other, its barrier effect prevails allowing the formation of a stable complex with steel substrate to be formed giving a better anticorrosion protection effect.  1111111111111.png  22222222222222.png  33333333333333.png |
