Model calculation shows that the
compressive stresses developed in the
damage zone (60-80 N/mm2) are comparable
with the brick material uni-axial
compressive strength (70-100 N/mm2).
Therefore, the snorkel lining performance in
the early stage of the campaign could be
sensitive to the variation in construction (e.g.
joint tightness in the snorkel ring, variation
of material properties) and preheating. In
fact, post mortem examination confirmed
that the used snorkel bricks often contained
thermal cracks parallel to hot face.
A high preheat temperature (i.e.
>500°C) would reduce the contact stresses
of the snorkel internal bricks. However, a
higher preheat temperature would increase
the outward expansion of the inner brick
lining and resulting in increased tensile
stresses on the outer castable and subsequent
cracking, allowing metal and slag
infiltration. Calculation indicates that the
tensile stresses generated on the outer
castable are generally higher than the tensile
strength of the castable materials, resulting
in thermal cracks in the outer castable during
preheating (see Fig.7).
