Recent years, a hot debate over students’ choice of a major is gaining importance. Some people maintain that students need to choose a profitable major, while others contend that major selection should be pondered over on the basis of individual interests and talents. From my perspective, I take the side of the latter opinion. Nowadays, it is nonetheless understandable for students choosing a study field on the job availability to secure a well-paid job. The first contributing factor is that some students crave a handsomely-paid post in the thought that many years of hard-work must pay off. Every year, droves of graduates are facing trials and tribulations in job hunting because of the turbulent and ever-changing job markets. To keep up with the Jones, they need to be well-prepared in advance. A profitable study field actually makes a great difference. In addition, to live up to their parents’ expectation plays a part in choosing a major. Invariably poor kids and poor parents are caught in one of the oldest webs of love, duty and guilt Parents are trying to steer their kids towards a rosy future. Meanwhile the pressure on kids is severe. They are truly torn. One part of them feels obliged to fulfill their parents’ expectation. After all, parents are more experienced and presumably wiser. Thus, to single out a beneficial specialty absolutely serves as a justification for those students. It is definitely true that students long for a good job. And it is also palatable that they do this for their family’s sake. But the merciless reality has taught us a good lesson: No one dares to assert which career is one hundred percent prospective. This is mainly because, like other markets, demands of a job market are constantly changing and extremely unpredictable. Moreover, the job market is bound to undergo changes which students may find difficult to cope with, for they will spend four years straight in ivory towers cut off from information of the world outside. And we should not ignore another element influencing the job market. Suppose most students are vying for a couple of majors which may guarantee a bulging pocket, their individual value as would-be workers is liable to be depreciated. Above all, instead of being baffled by those predictable and groundless statistics, students need to make rational decisions based on their potentials and interests. However, some may argue that the purpose of universities is to serve the society. Therefore students’ choice of a study field should be decided on in this regard. In contrast, the primary goal of higher education is to help cultivate one’s critical thinking and a learning ability. Besides, opinions differ among students when it comes to individual’s aim of education. Some work hard at gaining a bachelor degree or ever a master degree to secure an occupation. Some are driven by getting respect and achieving lofty ideals. Some strive to quench their thirst for knowledge. And some ambitious men even take bold steps to challenge and conquer the known with their resolve and commitment to the scientific research. To sum up, it is advisable for students to figure out a major according to their interests and talents. No doubt, interest has cultivated and inspired generations of great writers, renowned scientists and gifted artists. And interest can unleash one’s entrepreneurial side of exploration, discovery and creativity. Furthermore, interest nourishes one’s undivided attention and dedication which may warrant easy access to amazing breakthroughs. And these breakthroughs are a passport to fortune, success, fame, respect and prestige, all these by-products. Equally important, let’s get down to fundamentals and admit that universities never fail to entice and entrance students with their unique magic formula. It says that in universities, students may have a glimpse of a higher way of life, and let their imagination, interest, passion and aspirations soar without being penalized by cold splashes of reality. |
