COMPARISON OF PROPERTIES AMONG SPINEL-CONTAINING CASTABLES FOR STEEL LADLE
Rak-Hee Kim*, Seung-Jun Lee, Sung-Ryong Jung and Seok-Keun Lee Korea Refractories Co. Ltd., KOREA
In this study, the thermal properties of each castable have been tested and compared because the thermal properties
of AS, ASM and AM vary on the basis of the spinel formation conditions. Therefore, this study aims to identify the
castable performance according to the service condition focused on thermal properties.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
The AS, ASM and AM castable, of which the MgO contents were within the range of 5wt%, were fabricated to be
used as experimental specimen.
Microsilica was not added into the AS castable, but 1% micrsilica, which was considered to be a general amount of
additive, was added into the AM castable in order to control the expansion. And two types of ASM
castable specimen were formulated by varying the content of microsilica.
All samples contained white fused alumina (Union, Korea) as aggregates. In the AS (A), the 22wt% alumina richspinel
(AR-78, Almatis, Netherland) was used without addition of microsilica, however, in the ASM (B, C), and
2.5wt% magnesia(dead-burnt magnesia 95wt%, d≤75㎛ were used with varying
the additive amount of microsilica.
And 5wt% calcium aluminate cement (Secar71, Kerneos, France), which played role as a binder, and
microsilica(with differeent contents such as 0.5wt% and 0.7wt%; 971U, Elkem, Norway) were used as well. The
chemical composition of the experimental specimen and of raw materials are shown in table 1 and table.
