Fig. 1 shows the bending strength of AZT and AZTn ceramic after quenching in comparison with the initial strength after sintering. The strength of the as-sintered samples was low, mainly because of the increased grain growth at the used sintering temperature as shown in previous publications.1,2 No significant change in strength was measured after first quenching from 950 °C. When the ceramic was five times quenched from 950 °C, the strength of the AZTn samples decreased, but in the case of the AZT samples the change was within the range of error. A remarkable fact was that quenching from 1200 °C resulted in an increase in strength of the AZT and AZTn samples, both in the case of one and five quenching cycles. As mentioned in the “Introduction” section, partial decomposition of Al2TiO5 was assumed to contribute to this behavior.1,2

    Formation of aluminum titanate
    In order to produce Al2O3-rich magnesium aluminate spinel ceramic with aluminum titanate, pure Al2TiO5 was presynthesized and subsequently added to the
spinel raw material. At first, suitable conditions for the Al2TiO5 formation according to the following equation were determined.
    Al2O3 + TiO2 ↔ Al2TiO5
    The percentage of aluminum titanate formed at two different temperatures and holding times is shown in Table I. A nearly complete
reaction of the used powders to Al2TiO5 was achieved at 1650 °C.

图1所示的是AZT和AZTn陶瓷淬火后的弯曲强度与烧结后的初始强度的比较。在作为烧结的样品的强度是低的,主要是因为在所用烧结温度下晶粒生长增加了,就如同以前发表的论文(1,2)所示的那样。在第一次从950℃淬火后测定强度没有显著变化。当陶瓷从950℃被五次淬火后,AZTn样品的强度降低,但在AZT样品,其变化仍在误差范围之内。一个显着的事实是,1200℃淬火导致AZT和AZTn样品的强度增加,不管是一次或是五次循环淬火。正如在”前言“部分所提到的,钛酸铝的部分分解可能是促成这一行为的原因(参考文献1,2)。

    为了用钛酸铝生产富含氧化铝的铝酸镁尖晶石陶瓷,预先合成纯钛酸铝并随后添加到尖晶石原料中。首先,根据下面的等式确定了钛酸铝的形成的合适的条件。
   【公式:氧化铝 + TiO2 ↔ 钛酸铝:Al2O3 + TiO2 ↔ Al2TiO5】
    在两个不同温度和持续时间的条件下,钛酸铝形成的百分比见表I。所用的粉剂在1650℃时几乎完全反应生成钛酸铝。
