The investigation of an AZT ceramic in comparison with a pure alumina ceramic by means of wedge splitting tests with in-situ crack growth observation was the topic of previous work in cooperation with “Forschungszentrum Juelich”, Germany.7 Growth and opening displacement of the main crack was accompanied in the AZT ceramic by pronounced microcracking, branching and bridging processes. The thermal shock parameter R’’’’, which is a measure of the resistance against crack propagation under thermal shock loading8, was determined. The values predicted a higher thermal shock resistance of the AZT ceramic compared with
pure Al2O3.7
    As described in another previous publication9, different thermal expansion coefficients of the phases formed during sintering contribute to the high resistance of
AZT ceramics against thermal shock.
    The focus of the present paper is on Al2O3-rich magnesium aluminate spinel, a widely used refractory material, which was modified by the addition of aluminum titanate. Initially, typical results of thermal shock experiments on AZT ceramic are shown for the purpose of comparison.
