Research Fellow/Senior Research Assistant (Fixed term for 2 years) Engineering and Environment Ref: EAE14/03 Salary: Research Fellow: ￡33,242 - ￡34,572; Senior Research Assistant: ￡26,479 - ￡32,181 Based within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment, an Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council funded research position is available as part of a joint program with Nottingham Trent University. The aim of the project is to shape liquid surfaces and manipulate droplets by using the dielectric properties of liquids to control the wetting of materials. You will join the group of Professor McHale working on solid-liquid interactions including super-water-repellent surfaces, electrowetting, droplet microfluidics and drag reducing surfaces. You will develop surfaces and devices similar to those within electrowetting, and develop and conduct experiments on voltage controlled wetting. This will involve writing high quality reports and papers for publication and dissemination. You will need to evidence the expertise in instrumentation, engineering/integration of simple micro-fabricated devices, use of optical methods for contact angle measurement, knowledge of techniques to coat and characterize surfaces, and skills in the design and experience of planning and conducting experiments. A PhD in engineering, materials, experimental physics or a related discipline is essential; relevant postdoctoral experience is desirable. An appointment will be made at either Senior Research Assistant or Research Fellow level dependent on the extent to which the desirable criteria in the Person Specification are satisfied.
