MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES
Alumina-magnesia castables with distinct free expansion levels (AM13, AM45 and AM100)7 were used for evaluating the effect of a structural constrained environment during the material’s sintering. Tabular alumina (T- 60, D ≤ 6 mm, Almatis, Germany) was selected as coarse aggregates and, for the in situ spinel reaction, reactive alumina (CL370, Almatis, Germany) and dead-burnt magnesia (95 wt% of MgO, CaO/SiO2 ratio = 0.37 Magnesita Refratários S. A., Brazil) were added to the castable matrix. The compositions also comprised 6 wt% of calcium aluminate cement (Secar 71, 70 wt% of Al2O3, Kerneos, USA) as the binder agent and 1 wt% of microsilica (971 U, Elkem, Norway). The only variable in the castables’ formulations was the magnesia grain size (Dmax ≤ 13, ≤ 45 and ≤ 100 μm), which ensured different expansion levels without changing the chemical composition. After mixing, prismatic samples (150 x 25 x 25 mm3) were prepared under vibration, cured for 24h at 50°C in a humid environment (100% of relative humidity), dried for 24h at 110°C and calcined at 600°C (1°C/min) for 5h. The samples were then fired at 1500°C for 5 hours in two different structural conditions: expansion free and under constraint. A cement-bonded (6 wt% of CAC) highalumina castable with high mechanical strength (σf > 50 MPa under 3pt bending testing) was produced and cast around the alumina-magnesia samples in order to impose the desired constraint, according to the sketch
presented in Figure 1.
