2. Experimental 2.1. Material and experimental conditions The experiments, which were modified in order to be able to control redox condition, were carried out by an in-diffusion method (Sato, 1998). Table 1 shows the experimental conditions for the diffusion experiments. A Na bentonite, Kunigel-V1R (Kunimine Industries), of which much data regarding fundamental properties have been reported up to the present, was used in a series of diffusion experiments. The major constituent clay minerals of the bentonite are Nasmectite and chalcedony, which makes up 46–49 and 37–38 wt.%, respectively (Ito et al., 1993,1994). Some other minor minerals, such as quartz, plagioclase, calcite, dolomite, analcite and pyrite are also contained as impurities.
