The basic operators of mathematical morphology (MM) include erosion, dilation, opening and closing. Generally speaking, corrosion shrinks the images while dilation enlarges images. Corrosion can weaken or even eliminate the bright details smaller than structural elements. In contrast, dilation can fill the cavity as well as fix the unsmoothed portion of images. Opening and closing are the combination of erosion and dilation in different sequences, i.e., opening is obtained by erosion first followed by dilation while closing is obtained by dilation first followed by erosion. Opening can smooth contours of the images and eliminate smaller size bright details. In contrast, closing can integrate the narrow gaps and slender curved mouth as well as eliminate smaller size dark details. The top-hat transform is defined as the difference between the input (original) image and the results of opening. Top-hat transform was originally named because of its use of a flat upper part of a cylindrical parallelepiped shape. Bottom-cap transformation is defined as the difference between the results of closing and the input (original) images. |
