Workshop Course Description In this 2 days workshop, learn to use Lumerical’s suite of products by working through some application examples of current industrial and academic interest. The examples are chosen to demonstrate many important product features, and attendees will obtain a broad range of knowledge that can later be applied across a wide variety of applications. Users are expected to have a basic familiarity with the products which can be obtained by watching the product introductory webinars and/or using a trial version of the software. This workshop will focus on Lumerical’s optical softwares (FDTD Solutions and MODE Solutions) described in sections 2 & 3 below. The workshop will also include an introduction to our electrical software (sections 4). A pre-training survey will be sent to all attendees to identify the applications of greatest interest and the time spent on each application will be tailored accordingly. 1. Introduction to Lumerical’s product suite. In this brief introduction, we will explain how Lumerical’s products can be used either standalone or in combination to solve a wide range of design challenges. 2. FDTD Solutions. FDTD Solutions is the industry leading FDTD solver for photonic applications. In this session users will learn how to optimally use advanced features of the software such as the multi-coefficient material model for dispersive media, conformal meshing, near to far field projections, parameter sweeps and optimization. Specific topics include • Introduction to FDTD Solutions • Show how to use FDTD Solutions by one example • Examples o Grating devices o Plasmonic simulations (nanohole arrays, particle scattering, chromatic polarizer) o Metamaterials o OLED simulation o Liquid crystal devices • Simulation tips 3. MODE Solutions, FDTD Solutions. MODE Solutions is a versatile design environment which includes a mode solver and propagation simulators for the design, analysis and optimization of fibers, waveguide devices, components and subsystems. In this session, users will learn modal analysis, dispersion analysis, propagation, dispersive materials in a frequency domain solver and parameter extraction. Specific topics include • Introduction to MODE Solutions • Show how to use Mode Solutions by two examples (one for showing how to use EME) • Examples o Fibers o Waveguides o Grating couplers o Ring resonators, couplers, splitters o Electro-optical modulators • Simulation tips 4. DEVICE and FDTD Solutions. DEVICE is a powerful 2D and 3D finite element Poisson and drift diffusion solver that can calculate the electrical properties of diodes, transistors and other semiconductor devices. It is specifically designed to operate with FDTD Solutions and MODE Solutions to solve for silicon-based optoelectronic structures such as solar cells, CMOS image sensors, optoelectronic modulators and high speed photodiodes. In this session, users will learn about the electrical material models, how to specify a doping profile, how to define electrical contacts, and how to run DC steady-state or transient simulations to calculate device characteristics. Specific topics include • Introduction to DEVICE • Examples o Solar cells o CMOS image sensors o Photodiodes • Simulation tips |
