Manuscript #JTE101732-08:

Editor's Comments:

Review comments:
Generally, the manuscript gave an interesting research method, however, the weakness of the paper is extremely remarkable. The paper only presented several simple tests and offered a very limited data to describe one kind of "new" approach, I doubt if the experimental results and conclusions were reliable. Thus, more experimental tests to support the conclusions would be helpful and inevitable for the reader to understand the method used in this study.
1. the sentence of abstract "The angle of friction of mixtures...... AC mixture" on page 1 is confusing.
2. on page 3, what did MTS equipment represent?
3. With respect to the asphalt material viscous-elastic properties, the stress and strain are extremely important in analyzing the deformation of asphalt pavement during the traffic loading. The methodology, shown on page 3-4, did not address the strain information in Eq. (1) and (2). Why did the author ignore it in the "new" approach in this study?
4. for experimental materials, only one asphalt binder type and one aggregate source used in this study would make the reader suspect that the analysis results were reliable.
5. on page 5, why did the author test the samples at 60C. Was it based on the asphalt PG grade or other specification? more references were needed.
6. more data and references are needed to support the conclusions "This is at variance with our findings. We found ... than the optimum value" on page 5.
7. in this study, the reviewer could not find how many repeated samples were utilized and what statistical method were employed in analyzing the experimental data.
8. why did the author use three testing temperatures (15, 25 and 60C) to test the sample, the motivation should be addressed.
9. the conclusions shall be rewords in accordance with the additional experimental testing.
10. elaborating the physical properties of limestone used in this study may be helpful to support the conclusions.
11. more references and English editing are needed. Reading the author instructions carefully will help the author correct the manuscript format.

Reviewer #1 (Elaboration on Question 3.):

More details about the mix design types (AC-16 and BL-16) could be useful.

Reviewer #1 (Elaboration on Question 4.):

The results are not discussed in detail.

Reviewer #1 (Elaboration on Question 6.):

The results are not discussed in detail.

Reviewer #1 (Comments to the Author):

• The language used needs several corrections.
• The paper is very short and more data / discussion need to be included. Following are some suggested additions:
o The influence of the testing parameters on the properties of
BL-16 mixtures has not been included in the results.
o The shear strength of the asphalt mixtures were measured at three temperatures (15, 25 and 60 C). The authors could explain why these temperatures were used.
o The loading rate was set to 50 mm/min when measuring the shear strength. Why weren't other loading rates considered ?
o Under the section 'Loading Rate', the authors state "...with increasing loading rate, the mixture has ... making a larger angle of friction". It is not clear what the authors want to say in these lines.
o Under the section 'Loading Rate', the authors state "the shear strength of asphalt mixture is increasing fast with the loading rate." The authors could explain the significance of this statement.
o Under the section 'Testing Temperature', the authors state "...angle of friction is most affected to the change of mixture gradation, shape and angularity of aggregates...". There is no data in the paper to support this.
o The authors state "the shear rate is highly related to the dynamic stability...". The authors need to be more specific, and possibly support this with some kind of correlation.
o The authors state "The mixture designed by Bailey method has higher angle of friction...". This needs to be supported with data in the paper.

Reviewer #2 (Elaboration on Question 8.):

All figures with mechanical properties of asphalt materials should note the temperature at which the test was conducted.

Reviewer #2 (Comments to the Author):

This is an interesting paper estimating the shear strength with a simple experimental setup. The method also uses the lab measurements from IDT and unconfined compressive test. Comments are as follows:

1. Testing temperature of 60{degree sign}C. This temperature seems quite high. It is in the range of higher PG grade temperature. In this temperature range, significant viscous behavior is observed, which make mechanical experiments very difficult. Can the authors explain why choose this temperature and comment on the viscous behavior during testing?

2. IDT test is used here to derive tensile strength. According to AASHTO standard, IDT should be used at temperatures of 20{degree sign}C or below. Can the authors comment their IDT test at 60{degree sign}C?

3. The indirect tension strength has been used as direct tension strength. However, it should be clearly noted that indirect tension only resembles direct tension and it is actually in a complex 2D stress situation. This has been discussed in details in reference 10 in this paper. The authors could consider compare with reference 10 and clarify this issue.
