This paper presents a general model suitable for analyzing performance of a two-stage vapor compression heat pump system with different types of inter-stage configurations. The general model is derived from a typical cycle with an economizer subcooler, and then generalized to other cycles by employing an “input domain”. The “input domain” is expressed with a figure that employs an inter-stage subcooling parameter (ε) as the x-axis and the high-stage compressor suction refrigerant specific enthalpy and the injection refrigerant specific enthalpy as the y-axis with two scales, which provides well understanding of the differences and relations among the selected eight types of inter-stage configurations. Case studies show that, the general model is capable of performance comparison among different types of cycles, as well as refrigerant selection and operational analysis. With additional calculations of ε, evaporating and/or condensing pressure, the general model can be extended to other more detailed forms.

General model of a two-stage vapor compression heat pump is first derived using  an economizer subcooler, then shown to be capable of evaluating many other inter-stage configurations as well  With novel inter-stage subcooling parameter (ε) along the x-axis, and refrigerant thermodynamic properties on y-axis, side-by-side comparison is made of eight different inter-stage configurations  Application of ε to other heat pumps is also explained in detail
