Part I

This letter is written to offer my vigorous endorsement of Dr. Hegen Ouyang’s application for admission to the Research Fellow position at Economic Geology Research Centre of James Cook University. I consider Hegen is an outstanding person and a student of exceptional promise, who can contribute substantially to your program, and I am happy to support him and I urge you give him application your closest consideration.

Hegen is my PhD student in economic geology (from 2010.09 to 2013.06) at China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and is a research assistant currently in Institute of Mineral Resources, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. His research focuses on the formation and evolution of several types of hydrothermal ore deposits in northeast China, mainly including polymetallic vein Ag-Pb-Zn and porphyry Mo-Cu deposits, and utilizing a variety of geochronological and geochemical approaches in combination with geological constraint to better understand their geodynamic settings. During the past three and a half years, Hegen published four papers in international journals and his other paper to Gondawana Research is in revising. It is noticeable of his hard work and good communication skills in English.

Hegen went with me for field work three times. The latest time was a field trip for epithermal and lode gold deposits in East Jilin Province with Dr. Richard Goldfarb and Thomas Monecke. I noticed he is a very hard worker and can work both independently and collaboratively in a team in the field, and happy to communicate with foreigners. Each year, my students, as well as Hegen, will work in miners or exploration camps. The preparation for the field works (e.g., book the ticket, plan the trip, car rental, and accommodation) and communication with mine managers (negotiate sampling works in the mine) are all done by themselves. From this point, I think Hegen is a good logistics worker also.

In general, I consider Hegen a very promising applicant to your program. I have the least reservation on his potential to succeed in his future educational as well as professional pursuit under your supervision, and will be more than happy to discuss with you any matters pertaining to this reference letter.

Part II

During the three years in which I have known Mr. Hegen Ouyang, I have had the pleasure of working with him in both academic and extracurricular settings. I have watched him grow as a student and as a person. Hegen is an individual I take genuine pleasure in recommending because I consider him a unique and exceptional candidate and I am happy to support him.

I earned my bachelor and master degree in geology at Jilin University, and my doctorate in mineral deposit at Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAGS). I have been a member of Institute of Oceanology, CAGS, since 1997, and serving as a doctorial advisor in marine geochemistry since 2002. My research field is modern submarine hydrothermal activity and I have published a number of articles in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Chemical Geology, Journal of Asian Earth Science, and Science in China Series D: Earth Sciences. I got the China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists last year. My research team is equipped with some equipments, e.g., microscope, ICP-MS, scanning electron microscope, and α-rays spectrometer. It provides a well environment for my postgraduate research student (including Hegen) to be familiar with and master some of the basic analysis methods in geology.

Hegen is my postgraduate research student (from 2007.09 to 2010.06) in modern seafloor hydrothermal system at Institute of Oceanology, CAGS. His thesis topic is “Micromorphological, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the Fe-Si-Mn oxyhydroxides from the PACMANUS hydrothermal field, Eastern Manus Basin”. The research significance of this work is in understanding the possible scenarios for the formation of Fe-Si-Mn oxyhydroxides in back-arc geological environments as it is helpful for mineral exploration of the ancient VHMS deposits. The research results have been published in Journal of Asian Earth Science and Science in China Series D: Earth Sciences. Through these works, I think Hegen was good trained in writing scientific paper in English and in conducting experiments. The pretreatment of the samples, including drying, ground, handpicks, and digest for ICP-MS and sequential leaching analyzing; the design of experiments, including scanning electron microscope, electron probe micro-analyser, X-ray diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, ICP-MS, and sequential leaching; the conduct of analysis, including scanning electron microscope, electron probe micro-analyser, ICP-MS, and sequential leaching; and the data processing, including mapping and/or analysis using the softwares of Origin, SPSS, Surfer, and Coredraw, are all done by himself.

Judging by what I know of him, I think Hegen is fully qualified to pursue a degree in your program. I therefore recommend his with enthusiasm. And I shall greatly appreciate if you can favorably consider his application for admission.

没必要太过润色,推荐信是翻译推荐人英语水平的。
建议你把文中夸张的修辞全部删掉,比如这句
I consider Hegen is an outstanding person and a student of exceptional promise,
最好改为
I consider Hegen as a very promising student.
