A solution containing 0.3 kg of sodium hydroxide dissolved in 1.0 liter of deionized water [(DIW)] was prepared and injected into a 27 liter reaction vessel. The sodium hydroxide solution in the reaction vessel was cooled to room temperature with an ice/salt bath, and then 0.5 kg of L-prolin was added to the alkaline solution and dissolved with stirring, making a solution having a 1: 2 ratio of L-proline to [NAOH.] Cooling of the solution was continued to a temperature [OF-10.deg.C] to [10.deg.C.] The reaction medium was then diluted with about 2 liters of ethanol.
