Summary
The Old Dominion University Research Foundation has an opening for a post-doctoral research associate to carry out research in mechanistic studies in the generartion of hydrogen from water with the use of mixed-metal ruthenium(II)-cobalt(II/III) complexes in the University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Applications are sought from highly motivated individuals with a strong background in transition metal chemistry. Qualified candidates must have experience in the following areas: analytical (inclusive of electrochemical, ESI MS, the use of a GC, and NMR spectroscopy) and/or physical chemistry, spectroscopy of materials, and the syntheses of ligands for coordination to transition metals. Salary will be determined according to the research skills and experience of qualified candidates.

Please include your curriculum vitae (in pdf format), a brief description of research accomplishments and interest, and contact information for three references.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- To carry out synthesis of ligands for coordination to transition metals.

- To be efficient in analytical techniques (inclusive of electrochemical, ESI MS, the use of a GC, and NMR spectroscopy) and/or physical chemistry, and know how to apply EPR spectroscopy for the characterization of paramagnetic materials.

- To prepare laboratory data so they can be used to interpret mechanisms on how hydrogen is produced under acidic conditions.

- To write scientific papers and reports.

- To prepare and make presentations at scientific meetings.

- To assist in developing and monitoring safe laboratory practices.

MIN QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry
- No experience after Ph.D required
- Must have knowledge and skills in order to carry out synthetic inorganic chemistry and to investigate the mechanism of the use of novel mixed-metal binuclear ruthenium(II)-cobalt(II) complexes for the production of hydrogen in acidic aqueous media.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES:
A variety of complex duties as required to carry out research.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT/DECISION MAKING:
Some independent judgment is required under the supervision of the PI.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:
May assist in supervising graduate students and undergraduate students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires some moderate physical exertion such as periods or standing, walking over rough uneven or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching reaching or lifting of moderately heavy items (10-25 lbs).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work involves moderate discomforts which require special precautions, e.g. working around moving parts, carts or machinery, working with irritant chemicals, conducting field work in various outdoor weather conditions.
