[资源] Lesson1 The audacity of hope

On behalf of the greatstate of Illinois, crossroads of anation, land of Lincoln(排比是英语演讲中的常用技巧),let me express my deepest gratitude for the privilege of addressing thisconvention. Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let’s face it(插入语), my presence(很地道)onthis stage is pretty unlikely. My father was a foreign student, born and raised (生于斯,长于斯)ina small village in Kenya.

He grew up herdinggoats, went to school in a tin-roof shack. (地道)His father, my grandfather, was a cook, a domestic(常用词汇)servant to(注意介词) the British. But my grandfather had larger dreams(注意体会这里的比较格式) for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in amagical place, America, that shone as a beaconof freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.(定语从句)    【介绍父亲的背景】

While studying here, my father met mymother. She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas. Herfather worked on oil rigs and farms through mostof the Depression. The day after Pearl Harbor my grandfather signed up for duty; joinedPatton’s army, marched across Europe.(动词连用,简洁明白)Back home, my grandmother raised a baby and went towork on a bomber assembly line(常用词汇).

Afterthe war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through F.H.A., andlater moved west all the way to Hawaii in search of opportunity.And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter. A common dream, born oftwo continents. (这句话没有谓语,但是意思很明确,要结合语境)My parents shared not only an improbable(比impossible可能性大) love,(省略but also)they shared an abiding faith inthe possibilities of this nation.            【介绍母亲的背景,并作总结】

They would give me an African name, Barack,or “blessed,” believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success(独立主格结构).Theyimagined(想法设法,可以学习使用)me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren’t rich, becausein a generous America you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential. They’reboth passed away now. And yet, I know that on this night they look down on me withgreat pride.  【总结共同点,引出话题“美国梦”】

They stand here.

And I stand here today, grateful for thediversity of my heritage, aware that my parents’ dreams live on in my twoprecious daughters.

I stand here knowing that my story is part of (没有the)the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all ofthose who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is mystory even possible.(三个that引导的宾语从句,最后一句倒装加以强调)

Tonight, we gather to affirm (与confirm不同)the greatness of our Nation— not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, orthe size of our economy.(排比)Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declarationmade over two hundred years ago, “We hold these truths to be self-evident,that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator withcertain inalienable rights, that among these areLife, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”(独立宣言)Thatis the true genius of America, a faith —(演讲中的停顿) afaith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles; that we can tuck inour children at night and know that they are fed and clothed and safe fromharm; that we can say what we think, write whatwe think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door; thatwe can have an idea and start our own business without payinga bribe(行贿); that wecan participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will be counted — at least most of thetime. This year, in this election we are calledto reaffirm our values and our commitments, to hold them against a hard realityand see how we’re measuring up to the legacy ofour forbearers and the promise of futuregenerations.

And fellow Americans, Democrats,Republicans, Independents, I say to you tonight:

We have more work to do — more work to dofor the workers I met in Galesburg, Illinois, who are losing their unionjobs at the Maytag plant that’s moving to Mexico, and now are having to competewith their own children for jobs that pay seven bucks an hour;(定语从句)more to do for the father that I met who was losinghis job and choking back the tears, wonderinghow he would pay 4,500 dollars a month for the drugs his son needs without thehealth benefits that he counted on; more to dofor the young woman in East St. Louis, and thousands more like her, who has thegrades, has the drive, has the will, but doesn’t have the money to go tocollege.(排比,实例,列举三种人,给听众感同身受的体验)

Now, don’t get mewrong.

The people I meet, in small towns andbig cities, in diners and office parks, (反义词构成整体概念)theydon’t expect government to solve all their problems. They know they have towork hard to get ahead, and they want to. Go into the collarcounties(环城市区) around Chicago, and people will tell youthey don’t want their tax money wasted, by a welfareagency(福利机构) or by the Pentagon(五角大楼). Go into any inner city neighborhood, and folks willtell you that government alone can’t teach our kids to learn; they know thatparents have to teach, that children can’t achieve unless we raise their expectationsand turn off the television sets and eradicate the slanderthat says a black youth with a book is acting white. (列举法)

They know those things. People don’t expectgovernment to solve all their problems. But they sense,deep in their bones, that with just a slight change in priorities, we can make sure that every child inAmerica has a decent shot at life, and that the doors of opportunity remainopen to all. They know we can do better. And they want that choice. In thiselection, we offer that choice. Our Party has chosen a man to lead us whoembodies the best this country has to offer. And that man is John Kerry. 【顺势提出并介绍候选人,合情合理,简直在做推销】

John Kerry understands the ideals ofcommunity, faith, and service because they’ve defined his life. From his heroicservice to Vietnam, to his years as a prosecutorand lieutenant governor, through two decades in the United States Senate, he’sdevoted himself to this country. Again and again, we’ve seen him make toughchoices when easier ones were available. His values and his record affirm whatis best in us.

John Kerry believes in an America wherehard work is rewarded; so instead of offering tax breaks to companies shippingjobs overseas, he offers them to companies creating jobs here at home.

John Kerry believes in an America where allAmericans can afford the same health coverage our politicians in Washingtonhave for themselves.

John Kerry believes in energy independence,so we aren’t held hostage to the profits of oilcompanies, or the sabotage of foreign oilfields.

John Kerry believes in the Constitutionalfreedoms that have made our country the envy of the world, and he will neversacrifice our basic liberties, nor use faith as a wedgeto divide us.

And John Kerry believes that in a dangerousworld, war must be an option sometimes, but it should never be the firstoption.(并列式列举,用believe in引导)



(举例子)You know, a while backI met a young man named Shamus in a V.F.W. Hall in East Moline, Illinois. Hewas a good-looking kid — six two, six three, clear-eyed, with an easy smile.(总分式)

He told me he’d joined the Marines and washeading to Iraq the following week. And as I listened to him explain why he’d enlisted, the absolute faith he had in our countryand its leaders, his devotion to duty and service, I thought this young man wasall that any of us might ever hope for in a child.

But then I asked myself, “Are we servingShamus as well as he is serving us?”

I thought of the 900 men and women — sonsand daughters, husbands and wives, friends and neighbors, who won’t bereturning to their own hometowns.(平行概念代表一群人)

Ithought of the families I’ve met who were struggling to get by without a lovedone’s full income, or whose loved ones had returned with a limb missing ornerves shattered, but still lacked long-termhealth benefits because they were Reservists. (举例子是奥巴马演讲的一个特点)

When we send our young men and women intoharm’s way, we have a solemn obligation not to fudgethe numbers or shade the truth about why they’re going, to care fortheir families while they’re gone, to tend to the soldiers upon their return, andto never ever go to war without enough troops to win the war, secure the peace,and earn the respect of the world.(to引导平行结构)

Now let me be clear. We have realenemies in the world. These enemies must be found. They must be pursued. Andthey must be defeated. John Kerry knows this.(简单句,短促,有号召力)

And just as Lieutenant Kerry did nothesitate to risk his life to protect the men who served with him in Vietnam, PresidentKerry will not hesitate one moment to use our military might to keep Americasafe and secure.

John Kerry believes in America. And heknows that it’s not enough for just some of us to prosper — for alongside(相当于besides) our famous individualism, there’s another ingredient in the American saga.(用词耐人寻味),a belief that we’re all connected as one people.

If there is a child on the south side ofChicago who can’t read, that matters to me, even if it’s not my child.

If there is a senior citizen somewhere whocan’t pay for their prescription drugs, andhaving to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, evenif it’s not my grandparent.

If there’s an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or dueprocess, that threatens my civil liberties.(并列条件句)

It is that fundamentalbelief —I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper — that makesthis country work.(强调句)

It’s what allows us to pursue ourindividual dreams and yet still come together as one American family. Epluribus unum: “Out of many, one.”(把美国梦和责任联系起来)

Now even as we speak, there are those whoare preparing to divide us — the spin masters, thenegative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of“anything goes” .

Well, I say to them tonight, there isnot a liberal America and a conservative America— there is the United States ofAmerica.

There is not a Black America and a WhiteAmerica and Latino America and Asian America— there’s the United States ofAmerica.(欲扬先抑,欲肯定先否定)

In the end, that’s what this election isabout.

Do we participate in a politics of cynicismor do we participate in a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope. JohnEdwards calls on us to hope.           【归纳中心,引出Hope】

I’mnot talking about blind optimism here— the almost willful ignorance that thinksunemployment will go away if we just don’t think about it, or health carecrisis will solve itself if we just ignore it.(分别用ignore的名词和动词形式,值得学习)

That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about something moresubstantial. It’s the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singingfreedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hopeof a young naval lieutenant bravely patrollingthe Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker’s son who dares to defy the odds; thehope of a skinny kid with a funny name whobelieves that America has a place for him, too.(列举法下定义)

Hope — Hope in the face of difficulty. Hopein the face of uncertainty. The audacity of hope!

In the end, that is God’s greatest gift tous, the bedrock of this nation. A belief inthings not seen,a belief that there are better days ahead.

I believe that we can give our middle class relief and provide working families with a road to opportunity.【中产阶层】

I believe we can provide jobs to thejobless, homes to the homeless, and reclaim young people in cities acrossAmerica from violence and despair. 【下层民众】

I believe that we have a righteous wind at our backs and that as we stand onthe crossroads of history, we can make the right choices, and meet thechallenges that face us.【that引导并列句】

America! Tonight, if you feel the sameenergy that I do, if you feel the same urgency that I do, if you feel the samepassion that I do, if you feel the same hopefulness that I do— ifwe do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, fromFlorida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up inNovember, and John Kerry will be sworn in asPresident, and John Edwards will be sworn in as Vice President, and thiscountry will reclaim its promise, and out of this long political darkness abrighter day will come.【拉选票】
