°ïÄãÕÒÁ½Æª 1¡¢United States Patent 4728630 A particulate catalyst composition suitable for purification of terephthalic acid under reducing conditions and a method of preparation of such catalyst are disclosed. The catalyst composition includes catalytically active rhodium on a porous, granular, carbonaceous support material having a surface area of at least about 600 m2 /gram. Rhodium is present in an amount of about 0.01 to about 2 weight percent, based on the total weight of dry catalyst composition and calculated as elemental metal. In the presence of hydrogen, this catalyst exhibits a reduced terephthalic acid decomposition rate that is comparable to that for a palladium-on-carbon catalyst having the same catalyst metal loading. The catalyst is prepared by contacting a carbonaceous support material having a surface area of at least 600 m2 /gm and a pH value in its aqueous suspension of 9-11 with an aqueous rhodium salt solution having a pH of 1-4. 2¡¢SYNTHESIS OF ENANTIOMERICALLY PURE CYCLOHEXYLGLYCINE.SYNTHETIC COMMUNICATIONS, 29(24), 4327¨C4332 (1999) use rhodium on carbon (Rh/C) as the hydrogenation catalyst for the preparation of (S)-1. Using 0.05 equiv. of 5% Rh/C and 3.6 bar of H2- pressure, the hydrogenation proceeded smoothly at 50 ¡ãC in aqueous HCl. After removal of the catalyst, the product (S)-1 was easily isolated by neutralising the reaction mixture, followed by filtration. After drying, pure (S)-1 was isolated in 92% yield.15 Determination of the e.e. by HPLC showed that no racemisation hadoccurred. So, Rh/C can be used as an effective catalyst for the hydrogenation of phenylglycine to 1 without racemisation or significant hydrogenolysis. This method will probably also be effective in the hydrogenation of other aromatic amino acids such as 4-hydroxy-phenylglycine, phenylalanine and tyrosine. |
