Rhenium-osmium (Re-Os) radiometric age dates were obtained on four sections from the1 RTC core. Samples were selected to obtain a wide stratigraphic range and to avoid any evidence of hydrothermal alteration (filled fractures or veins). Analytical protocols followed are those reported by Selby and Creaser (2003) and Selby (2007) at the Total Laboratory for Source Rock Geochronology and Geochemistry. In brief, aliquant of a powdered sample were digested in a Carius tube with a tracer solution of 185 Re and 190 Os at 220¡ãC for 48 hr. Osmium was isolated from the acid medium using solvent extraction and microdistillation techniques. Rhenium was purified from the osmium-extracted acid medium using anion chromatography. The purified Re and Os fractions were analyzed on a Triton mass spectrometer using negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry. This study was completed during the same period as Rooney et al. (2012), which reported procedural blanks of 16.8 ¡À 0.4 pg Re and 0.4 ¡À 0.1 pg Os, with a 187 Os/188 Os value of 0.25 ¡À 0.21 (1 SD,n= 4) |
