| Over the last years, the concept of using the immune system to fight tumors has been reported . Immunization with DLL4-encoding plasmid DNA by in vivoelectroporation retarded the growth of orthotopically implanted mammary carcinomas in mice. Probably the main mechanism involved in this process was connected with targeting endothelial tip cells and DLL4 ligand. Importantly, no evidence for delayed wound healing responses or for toxicity associated with pharmacological DLL4 blocking was reported in mice immunized with the DLL4 vaccine. Induction of immunity toward mediators of pathological angiogenesis such as DLL4 will be asignificant step in clinical oncology because it could provide protection against recurrent malignancies in the adjuvant setting. |
