This is some background knowledge you need to have before reading this post. ABC and SBS, two mainstream media in Australia, are to be under efficiency review. The aim is said to be to ensure that the ABC is running its business as cost-effectively as possible. Fair enough, it makes sense to us, unless we link something else ABC said and did previously with the review session. Asylum seeker is a big issue, and government’s attitude towards it is “Stop The Boat”, which is quite harsh. Yes, most boats are deterred from coming and the policy is beginning to take effects. What’s beyond all people’s expectation is that allegations of mistreatment of asylum seekers emerged as well, and the ABC started reporting. People holding high offices in Australian Liberal Party are not happy with it.  What’s more, ABC is looking negative to Australia’s future, because of some newly emerging financial issues, which you can find here from this piece of news. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013- ... wn-rhetoric/5168700 All these are just making the Prime Minister Tony Abbott upset, and he started to blame ABC for its being unpatriotic. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014- ... cism-of-abc/5224676 After that, we all know what happened---ABC and SMH are to be put into review. It is actually quite hard not to link these together, and see this review as just a review, not revenge or punishment. Here are opinions from some media people: “I think the agenda for the review is to find a reason to reduce funding to the ABC, because the Government doesn’t like what the ABC does and says.” “This is about a government that doesn’t like scrutiny.” “This is not about finding efficiencies, it’s about cutting the ABC’s budget.” Developed countries are seen as democratic, and “fair”. Here I just share another sentence with you guys. “Politicians who cynically misuse the power of the state for personal or political benefit are a fat greater threat to democracy than criminals, even organized gangs.” Shame is that power misuse is legal here. I know that... And Australia is not that clever actually. The current Prime Minister stressed Japan is Australia's best partner in Asia, and he is urging Australia to follow the U.S. even more closely (voice for the U.S, cater for America's economy needs). Ridiculous is that he wants to reach Free Trade Agreement with China in a couple of months, given he has done all these stuff above. |
