PhD Research Offer:
Synthesis and self-assembly of colloidal molecules
Hybrid organic-inorganic nanoparticles with well-controlled morphology are currently of great research interest. Synthetic routes leading to robust aggregates made of nanoparticles of different chemical natures which are associated in a controlled manner, i.e. number of nanoparticles and geometrical arrangement, are especially investigated. Clusters of spheres could mimic the space-filling models of simple molecules and are called “colloidal molecules” [1].
Our strategy is based on a seeded-growth emulsion polymerization process leading to biphasic particles, which are composed of spherical silica spheres (50-400 nm) surrounded by a varying number of polystyrene (PS) nodules [2]:
The hydrophilic surface of the silica seed particles needs to be previously functionalized with methacryloxymethyltrimethoxysilane (MMS). In such conditions, the nucleation/ growth of the PS nodules is highly promoted at the silica surface, leading to multipod-like morphologies (bipods, tetrapods, hexapods, octopods, etc.). A key feature of this strategy is the synthetic process is reproducible, fast and may yield grams of biphasic submicronic particles up to 80% purity [3].
The aim of the next work is (i) to extend the synthesis recipe to clusters mimicking more complicated molecules and (ii) to study their self-assembly in “colloidal macromolecules” and colloidal crystals of unconventional symmetry.

Candidate’s eligibility
        Candidates must be citizens and permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application;
        Candidates must not be currently working abroad
        Successful candidates must return to China upon completion of the studies and/or research
        Candidates must have a good level of English (or French) language proficiency
        Candidates should specify in their application that they are applying for the UB/CSC joint scholarship scheme.
        Candidates can only apply for one subject.
        Candidates from Hong-Kong are not eligible.

Process
        Candidates send the completed application form with all requested documents by Feb. 17th 2014 to the PhD project supervisor at UB.
        UB will evaluate the student files, academic performance and English language ability of the candidates. Interviews will be conducted by the PhD supervisors via telephone or via videoconference.
        By March 20th UB will provide CSC and each qualified candidate with a copy of the admission letter.
        By April 5th 2014, after receiving the admission letter from the University of Bordeaux, candidates must apply to the CSC by completing an application for funding. Forms are available online at http://apply.csc.edu.cn through CSC’s application agencies.
        CSC will evaluate the candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities. The CSC Council will subsequently provide UB with a final list of scholarship recipients and inform the successful candidates before the end of May 2014.
