Magnetic pull-off instruments(磁引力仪器) employ an attraction principle and a stationary magnetic field. These mechanical instruments measure the force required to pull a permanent magnet from a coated magnetic metal substrate. The magnetic force of attraction to the substrate beneath the coating is opposed by a spring or coil. Tension is applied to the spring/coil until the magnetic attraction to the magnetic substrate is overcome. The instrument must be placed directly on the coated surface to obtain a measurement. The force holding the permanent magnet to the magnetic base is inversely proportional to the thickness of the coating layer(s) between the magnet and the magnetic base. For example, a thin coating applied to a ferrous substrate will require greater spring tension to pull the magnet off than will a thicker coating, since the magnet is closer to the ferrous substrate with the thinner coating. This inverse relationship is reflected on the nonlinear instrument scale.

磁引力仪器遵循吸引的原则并采用了固定的磁场。这些机械仪器测量把一块永磁体从表面镀了磁性金属的基体上拉开所需要的力。对镀层下面的基体的磁吸引力由一个弹簧或弹簧圈来平衡。拉伸弹簧或弹簧圈,直到完全克服对磁性基体的吸引力。测量时该仪器必须直接放置于镀层表面。把永磁体和磁性基体绑定一起的力和磁铁与此基体间的镀层的厚度成反比。例如,在含铁的基体上镀一个薄的镀层就比一个厚的镀层需要更大的拉力来拉开磁铁。这是因为该磁铁在薄镀层的情况下离含铁的基体比厚镀层更近。 这一反比关系体现在仪器上非线性的刻度上。
