On wave propagation in elastic solids with cracks by Ch. Zhang and D. Gross

Preface This book contains the essential results obtained by the authors in recent years in the research area on dynamic fracture mechanics and wave propa- gation in damaged solids. Wave propagation in elastic solids with cracks is a very broad and attrac- tive research field. The corresponding results of this subject have stimulat- ing and wide-ranging engineering applications such as in materials science, in-situ safety and reliability control of complex structural components by acoustic emission, quantitative nondestructive materials testing by ultra- sonics, dynamic fracture mechanics, seismology and geophysics. For this reason, the present work is by no means exhaustive. It covers only a few pieces of a great deal of relevant subjects mentioned above. The references cited in the work are also not complete and some very important contri- butions may still be missing in the reference list. As a tool for solving the boundary-value and the initial boundary-value problems encountered, the boundary integral equation methods are applied in this work. They are shown to be very well suited and most useful for this purpose. Part of the research results presented here was obtained by Ch. Zhang at the Department of Engineering Mechanics of Tongji University, Shang- hai, China, and the Department of Civil Engineering, Hochschule fur Tech- nik, Wirtschaft und Sozialwesen (HTWS) Zittau/Gorlitz (FH), Germany. Support from the Chinese National Science Foundation, the Committee of Science and Technology of Shanghai and the Tongji University is gratefully acknowledged. The research work done at the Institute of Mechanics of TH Darmstadt, Germany, was partially supported by the German Research Community (DFG). This institution is also gratefully acknowledged. The authors would like to express their sincere gratitude to Professor Dr.-Ing. G. Kuhn, University of Erlangen, Germany, for carefully reviewing the first draft of the work and for his constructive comments. Ch. Zhang is much obliged to Professor J. D. Achenbach, Northwestern University, USA, for his kind encouragement and stimulating discussions over the past years. His initial guidance was very important to the research career of the first author. Finally, many thanks are due to our colleagues at the Department of Engineering Mechanics of Tongji University, Shanghai, China, the Institute of Mechanics of TH Darmstadt, and the Department of Civil Engineering of HTWS Zittau/Gorlitz (FH), Germany, for their collaboration and many fruitful discussions. Wave propagation in elastic solids with cracks is a very interesting but also a quite complex research field. Despite a great deal of advanced theo- retical and experimental investigations carried out in recent years, many questions remain unanswered and further intense research efforts are re- quired. The authors would be happy, if the present book could provide a few useful pointers to interested readers who are working on this stimulating and challenging research subject. Ch.
