How to confront GMF ?

| Genetically modified food (GMF) is a hot topic which had been debated between gevernment and ordinary people in China recently. The government experts insisted that GMF was safe enough to fit ordinary people because US scientists had been accomplished experiments for several years and GMF had been provided in the table of US families. The opposite view of scientists argued that GMF would do harm to our health sooner or later. They believed that GMF violated against nature and led to much illness for human beings, ie. various cancers. They gave us the evidence that the rats which was tested were covered with tumour and the crops which was not influenced on any insect. In my opinion, I firmly support the scientists against GMF. In history, it is proved that every thing which violated against nature by human beings would be revenged by nature sooner or later. So I believe that GMF is no exception. Whether GMF is asfe or not, the ordinary people should have right to know the truth and choose which kind of food by themselves at least. |

First thanks for a good topic to discuss and debate on. As an engineering graduate I am rather ignorant when it comes to GMF. Therefore I won't be able to take a stand for/against it. This being said, I do wish to ask people to discuss the following questions: 1. Through the entire history, human beings have been manipulating the nature including plants and animals. How to compare these manipulations with gene manipulation? 2. There are many artifacts that may bring harm to human beings but their effects will not be known until perhaps years later. I pick the use of mobile phones that may be causing brain tumor. Are we equally concerned about the close-to-mobile-holic use today as we are about GMF? What about computers, ipads, remote controls, and all devices that send radio signals? What about cars? Are we equally concerned about use of food additives and the soft drinks? Happy to discuss |

Your reasons to oppose GM food make sense to me. Actually I personally support GM food. http://www.fda.gov/food/foodscie ... ology/ucm346030.htm Here is a link from FDA official website in the US. I believe these Questions & Answers are enough to solve most of you puzzles. It's easy to find that rumours related to GM food are quite prevalent in China. Yes the public could say they have the right to choose, but the reality is government agencies decide to label GM food or not. In the US, GM food is not labeled because it's seen as 100% safe compared with traditionally planted food. In European countries and some commonwealth countries, most GM food is labelled, just as you've sad, the public have the right to choose. But these officials of these countries still see GM food as safe. Labeling itself doesn't reflect GM food's safety standards. http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/ ... /Pages/default.aspx I don't quite agree that things not naturally occurring are dangerous. This statement sounds correct but it's more based on feelings, not reality and facts. Imagine what the world would be like if it's dominated by philosophers  We may further discuss this problem  |

You are right @Lopemann, I belong to the rare species in the world who do not use much of mobiles. I make max 3 calls a day, less than 5min each and may receive up to 3 calls/day. Often I do not use it the whole day at all. I do not have an Iphone/Ipad/Ixxx, either. |
