A letter introducing a Chinese poem to American friends

|
Hello, XX, XX and XX! Yesterday, on the way to D.C., I talked about the traditional Chinese poems with Tom, the following is the original poem with its English translation (you may not see the Chinese characters on your computer). A common version of "Quiet Night Thought" runs (in Chinese, together with translation): ìoҹ˼ A Quiet Night Thought ´²Ç°Ã÷Ô¹â In front of my bed is the bright moonlight. ÒÉÊǵØÉÏ˪ I doubt if it was the frost on the ground. Åeî^ÍûÃ÷Ô I lift my head to look up at the August Moon, µÍî^˼¹Êàl Lowering my head to think about my hometown. This is its wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiet_Night_Thought The author is Li Bai, or Bai Li if we put the given name first.Li lived in the Tang Dynasty during 701-762 AD. Tang Dynasty is the most prosperous period during the Chinese history, during which time many scholars from Korea, Japan, and west Asia came to learns things from China, it is also the time when many merchants traveled on the Silk Road to do business between middle Asia and China. The Pinyin for the poem, A Quiet Night Thought go like this, Jinyesi (i in Pinyin is pronounced as EE, E as ur in absurd in British English. The pronunciation of the letter i is just as in my name). Chuang qian ming yue guang, Yi shi di shang shuang, Ju tou wang ming yue, Di tou si gu xiang. You can find the rhythms in this poem. Li's ancestors lived in Gansu province, which was where I was born. But Li himself was born in a place in Kazakhstan, in Tang Dynasty, that place is a part of China. He may move to Sichuan province when he was very young (Sichuan is famous for its hot, spicy food), and he grew up there. Li may be the most famous poet of Tang Dynasty, which is also the best period of the traditional poems in Chinese history. Li wrote many poems, we can find about 600 now. Li traveled to a lot of places during his life, he had three wives. He liked drinking alcohol very much, and also liked play a weapon called Jian, a sword-like thing. So, during his life, he was often away from his families and his hometown, he should has missed them a lot. This may be therReason why he wrote this poem. XX |
