Five different Chinese herbal extract powders are selected and at least 8 tests are conducted on each sample. Outlier analysis is performed on the data for attainment or discard. There are multiple statistical methods to analyse outliers for attainment or discard and in this experiment Dixon's method is used. The statistics for the maximum and minimum of the tests are respectively
where x is the measured value and n is the integer number incremented by 1; D1 is the statistics of the minimum and Dn is the statistics of the maximum. Let significance level α be 0.05% and D0.05,8 is found to be 0.554 [10]. If D is smaller than D0.05,8, then the data values are kept and no outliers are found in the test data. The results of outlier analysis and data attainment/discard is shown in Table 4.
From Table 4 it can be seen that both D1 and Dn are smaller than D0.05,8, with no outliers. This indicates that under the 95% significance level, the test results satisfy the requirements of the experiment and therefore the test method is considered as appropriate.
