Afternoon tea in England
Britain is a country with the largest consumption of tea in the world, every English person drinks three cups of tea a day. But there is no tea plant in England. Tea was first introduced to England by Katherine, princess of Portugal, who married to the King Charles II in 1662. At that time, everybody copied her way of brewing tea, drinking tea. Katherine set a new fashion in England, and she was called the Tea Drinking English Queen ever since. Afternoon tea was invented in England more than 200 years ago, the aristocrats got used to have breakfast and dinner, times between the two meals were long with hunger. The Duchess of Bedford created afternoon tea to kill the time. She prepared a few slices of bread, butter, jam, added a pot of Chinese tea to share with friends during the long afternoon. And this way was spread around the country rapidly. |
