http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512C33ZDC7L.jpg An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry By Graham L. Patrick Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA Number Of Pages: 768 Publication Date: 2005-06-10 ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0199275009 ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780199275007 Binding: Paperback Many of us think nothing of taking a painkiller to ease a headache, or to relieve the symptoms of 'flu. But how do drugs have their effect in the human body? How are new drugs discovered and designed to be as effective as possible? An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry offers an engaging insight into the one field of chemistry that arguably has the greatest impact on our quality of life than any other. Newly structured into four parts, the book opens in Part A with an introduction to pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Pharmacodynamics considers the types of molecular targets used by drugs, the interactions which are involved when a drug meets that target, and the consequences of those interactions. Pharmacokinetics considers the issues involved in a drug reaching its target in the first place. Part B goes on to examine the general principles and strategies involved in discovering and designing new drugs and developing them for the marketplace, while Part C looks at particular 'tools of the trade' which are invaluable in those processes. Finally, Part D covers a selection of specific topics within medicinal chemistry. Reflecting a change in emphasis in medicinal chemistry research, this Part takes us from the largely trial-and-error approach to drug design to the rational approach, and explores the most recent advances in molecular biology and genetics which have revolutionised drug design. With a striking new two-colour text design, and greatly enriched learning features, the third edition conveys the fascination of working in a field which overlaps the disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, cell biology, and pharmacology. A must-have textbook for any student of medicinal chemistry. Online Resource Centre - Figures available to download, to facilitate lecture preparation - 3D molecular structures, to enable students to visualise key structures in an interactive way - Multiple choice questions with answers, to support and encourage independent learning Summary: An Excellent Introduction to QSAR Rating: 5 This text has a very good chapters on QSAR (quantitative-structure activity relationship). I recommend this for the beginning scholars and students interested in QSAR for drug design. Summary: A Good Very Basic Look at Medicinal Chemistry Rating: 4 This book is good in the sense that it is an easy read for anyone interested in the subject. The drawings and cartoons provide a bit of humor to the text and the writing is cloear and focused. The only drawback to the book is that the layperson does not get the full effect of the book without a very good grasp of biochemistry (hence the term layperson!). To get the real scope of the book, one would need to read a good Biochem text ( I personally suggest Lehninger, et. al. Principles of Biochemistry, 3rd ed.). A good pharmacological text would greatly enhance the reader's understanding of the subject as well (i.e. Goodman and Gilman's). Otherwise, the book does give a very brief, very good overview of many aspects of Medicinal Chemistry. Summary: The best picture is the one on the cover!. Rating: 2 The author states that this book is aimed at undergraduates who have a basic grounding in chemistry and are interested in a future career in the pharmaceutical industry. Chemistry background includes now elements of quantum chemistry and molecular orbital theory. The author completely fails in including these elements in the Chapter on Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships. Moreover, he seems completely unaware of the fundamental contributions of Quantum Chemistry to QSAR. This text could perfectly include elements of (INTRODUCTORY) quantum-chemical applications to QSAR (the scientific literature is full). We must wait until the next edition to get a book that can be recommended to serious students!. Juan S. Gomez-Jeria Associate Professor Faculty of Sciences University of Chile.
