| Studies using 10Cr-0.015Si-0.08C alloys with S levels (10 and 150 ppm) below the solubility limit, under conditions where the martensitic structures were retained following increasing tempering times, suggested that the observed reduction in oxidation rate in steam at 650°C (1202°F) for the S-containing alloy was related to the tendency at approx. 600°C (1112°F) for fine chromium sulfide precipitates to oxidize, so effectively releasing Cr. Assuming that the chromium sulfide precipitates adjacent to the alloy surface would be the first to react, they might be considered to act as dispersed reservoirs of Cr, which provide a boost in the (effective) near-surface Cr content in the initial stages of oxidation. |
