The Way How We Learn English
Many of us have learned English for years, however, most of us learn English just for exams, when exams are over, no more learning English forever haha. English is a language, not only for exams, dear, it’s a tool for communication. Just like Mandarin, Cantonese, if you stop using it, you’ll find it’s hard to pick it up one day. Most of us, including undergraduates and postgraduates, bone up on grammar so much, well, grammar is essential for middle-school students, but for us, I don’t think it’s necessary to study it so hard. No offense. What I think is that English, as a subject, is just a skill, like, driving. If you can communicate with foreigners in English, meanwhile, they can understand what you mean, that’s enough. Do we often consider about grammar when we speak Chinese? Of course not. So, just use it, practice it as possible as you can, don’t care about too much on grammar, pronunciation and the mistakes you could make. I also hate to recite vocabulary, it’s so dull and boring. I like plain words which’s enough for oral English, I think. English isn’t only for going abroad, for CET6 or GRE, it’s a window through which we can enjoy more different kinds of music, movies, etc. The point is, the traditional way we are taught how to learn English isn’t correct, and most people don’t realize it, it’s the problem in education. OK, it only represents my own review, what do you think about it, guys? |

| I agree with you.we learn English isn't just for exam .It is a langue ,a tool. I am really poor in English .I choose a foreeigner teacher class. I feel difficult and embarrass in the class , I don't konw how to express my ideas. The stely of learning English in school is really uneffective. |

Hi, I agree 98% with you about the oral side of English. In fact the problem a lot of students face when they need to communicate with foreigners is that they have only the formal, dry and difficult sentences in their mind. These are things we learn in written and often via grammar. Indeed if people started to pay more attention to how the language is spoken in practice, not by grammar/textbooks, the oral English skill would be greatly enhanced. That being said, grammar, spelling, sentence patterns and word/phrases skills will be an important part of ones language skill when writing papers, reports and etc. In these situations, precision, correctness and variation in the stile do mean a lot for the quality. It has been shown all the time foreign students in e.g. Australia get lower marks for their assignments/exams, not because they are wrong in the subject matter, rather in the clear expressions of the ideas. My personal view only |
